Based on limited published evidence, CFAP68 is a microtubule inner protein (MIP) component of dynein-decorated doublet microtubules in the ciliary axoneme, structurally positioned in the axonemal A tubule inner sheath. UniProt annotations and GO terms indicate roles in cilium biology and flagellated sperm motility. However, a CRISPR/Cas9 gene-deficient mouse model revealed that Cfap68 knockout mice exhibited normal fertility, suggesting the gene is dispensable for male reproductive function 1. Further investigation is needed to elucidate its specific physiological role in ciliary function.
