The protein is virtually identical to the G-protein inhibitor protein (GIP) found in brain tissue, suggesting broader roles in G-protein signaling beyond vision 1. Given its chr1 localization near a disease locus for Usher syndrome type II, PDC is considered a potential candidate gene for this inherited disorder affecting photoreceptor function 1. The high sequence homology between human and mouse phosducin indicates evolutionary conservation of its function 1. While the precise molecular mechanisms of PDC's inhibitory activity require further characterization, its role as a transducin-binding protein establishes it as a key regulator of light-dependent signaling in photoreceptors. Clinical investigation of PDC mutations in retinal dystrophies is warranted given its essential role in phototransduction.
