Based on limited published evidence, TMEM235 is a glycosylated transmembrane protein localized to the apical plasma membrane. Unlike previously misclassified claudins, TMEM235 is structurally related to voltage-dependent calcium channel gamma subunits and contains N-linked glycans 1. A long non-coding RNA designated Tmem235 has been identified in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, where its expression is epigenetically regulated through H3K27me3 histone modifications under hypoxic conditions, with implications for hypoxia-induced apoptosis 2. The full physiological role of TMEM235 protein in human tissues remains unclear.
