Based on limited published evidence, TOMM20L is a mitochondrial translocase with predicted roles in protein import into mitochondrial matrix and tRNA import into mitochondria, functioning as part of the mitochondrial outer membrane translocase complex. The protein contains transmembrane domains and binds mitochondrion targeting sequences. While TOMM20L was identified as a differentially expressed gene in major depressive disorder expression studies 1, functional knockout studies in mice demonstrate that TOMM20L is not essential for male fertility when individually ablated 2, suggesting functional redundancy or dispensability under standard laboratory conditions.
