CYP2W1 (cytochrome P450 family 2 subfamily W member 1) is a unique monooxygenase enzyme with tumor-specific expression patterns and distinctive metabolic functions. The enzyme demonstrates an inverted orientation in the endoplasmic reticulum membrane compared to other cytochrome P450s, with an unknown immediate electron donor 1. CYP2W1 catalyzes the hydroxylation of saturated carbon-hydrogen bonds and metabolizes various endogenous substrates, including lysophospholipids and retinoid compounds such as all-trans-retinoic acid to 4-hydroxyretinoate 1. The enzyme is expressed during fetal gastrointestinal development but becomes silenced after birth through epigenetic modifications 1.
