Based on limited published evidence, DGLUCY (D-glutamate cyclase) is a mitochondrial enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of D-glutamate to 5-oxo-D-proline. The protein localizes to both the cytosol and mitochondrial matrix and exhibits protein binding activity. DGLUCY was identified as the first mammalian enzyme responsible for D-glutamate metabolism 1, with D-glutamate accumulation observed in tissues from DGLUCY-deficient mice. Recent bioinformatics analysis identified DGLUCY as one of 20 differentially expressed glutamine metabolism-related genes associated with diabetic foot ulcer pathology 2, suggesting potential involvement in diabetes complications.
