Based on limited published evidence, KRTAP19-1 is a keratin-associated protein (KRTAP) that functions in hair shaft structure. According to UniProt annotations, KRTAP19-1 is embedded in the hair cortex interfilamentary matrix where it facilitates rigid hair shaft formation through extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with hair keratins [UniProt]. The protein localizes to the cytosol and exhibits protein-binding activity (GO). While primarily characterized for hair structural roles, KRTAP19-1 was identified in an 11-gene signature associated with head and neck cancer progression 1, though its specific mechanistic role in cancer remains unclear.
