KRTAP19-3 (keratin-associated protein 19-3) is a structural protein embedded in the hair cortex matrix that forms extensive disulfide bond cross-links with hair keratin intermediate filaments, essential for creating rigid and resistant hair shafts. Based on limited published evidence, the protein exhibits protein binding activity localized to the cytosol. Recent studies characterize genetic diversity within the KRTAP19 gene family across species 1 and demonstrate that KRTAP19-3 DNA methylation patterns respond to acute stress exposure in humans 2, suggesting potential epigenetic regulation of this structural protein.
