sensory perception of smellodorant bindingplasma membraneolfactory receptor activity
OR14J1 is an olfactory receptor that functions as a G-protein coupled receptor mediating odorant binding and olfactory receptor activity at the plasma membrane for sensory perception of smell. Based on limited published evidence, OR14J1 has been implicated in metabolic phenotypes through gene-environment interactions: a polymorphism (rs4713207) near OR14J1 exhibits smoking-dependent effects on insulin sensitivity in glucose-tolerant individuals 1, and the OR14J1 C allele (rs9257691) shows independent association with Type 1 diabetes risk beyond established MHC loci 2. These findings suggest OR14J1 may have functions extending beyond olfaction, though mechanisms remain unclear.
