RTP5 (receptor transporter protein 5) is a putative membrane-associated protein involved in sensory perception and protein trafficking. Based on Gene Ontology annotations, RTP5 participates in olfactory receptor binding, detection of chemical stimuli in bitter taste sensation, and protein insertion into membranes [GO annotations]. At the molecular level, RTP5 exhibits protein binding capacity and functions in protein targeting to membrane compartments, suggesting a role in receptor trafficking and localization. Clinically, RTP5 has emerged as a diagnostic biomarker in two distinct disease contexts. In brucellosis, RTP5 was identified as one of six hub genes through machine learning analysis of whole blood transcriptomes from 103 patients and 46 controls, demonstrating robust diagnostic performance via ROC curve analysis 1. These genes are implicated in inflammatory responses, neutrophil regulation, and B cell receptor signaling—key pathways in brucellosis pathogenesis 1. Additionally, RTP5 was screened as a prognostic feature gene associated with metastatic skin cutaneous melanoma using Logit regression analysis of 358 metastatic versus 102 primary melanoma samples 2. While RTP5's specific functional role in these disease processes remains incompletely characterized, its consistent identification as a disease-associated biomarker suggests potential involvement in immune response regulation and disease progression mechanisms.
