Based on limited published evidence, SYCE1L is predicted to be involved in meiosis as a component of the synaptonemal complex central element. The synaptonemal complex is critical for meiotic chromosome 16 and recombination. SYCE1L has been identified as a novel candidate gene in male infertility studies, with rare potentially pathogenic variants detected in azoospermia patients 1; however, functional validation remains pending and the gene-disease relationship requires further investigation.
